Star Wars Armada

These Star Wars space combat games seem very popular at the moment. The little fighter based one doesn't appeal as much as the larger 'Armada' fleet action game. I played a game of this with Mike at the club on Sunday. About 300 points I think it was. I had a Imperial Star Destroyer, Victory Star Destroyer, and for fighter squadrons - 3 Tie Fighters, 2 Tie Interceptors and 2 Tie Bombers. Mike had a Mon Calamari Cruiser, Corellian Corvette, and Nebulon B frigate, and for fighter squadrons 3 X-wings and 2 Y-wings.

I charged straight at the Mon Calamari cruiser and directed all my fire at it.

I actually ended up ramming and we both took a point of hull damage.

And then in another round of fire the Mon Calamari Cruiser was no more! The Rebel fighters weren't having a good time of it either and they were all destroyed!

Turn 6 and the rebels had lost all their fighters and their main cruiser, the Imperials had only lost a few fighters and shields. Win to Imperials.

The system seems to work ok, but a heck of a lot of tokens, cards etc which I tend to dislike in games. Still I can see it works in a business sense to have all this material to sell, and it adds lots of little details which many collectors will like I imagine. The ship models are nice too, though all the clutter on the bases detracts from the visual aesthetics to my eyes. But if those aspects don't bother you so much, then I'd recommend checking it out.

  1. Obviously I was always going to play a fleet scale SW game if someone did one. It's not 100% what I was looking for but,the FFG approach does have some advantages. We've literally been at a game table during an afternoon, made sure the kids were distracted for a little while then peeled open shrink wrap and were, straight into playing.

  2. Cheers Jamie, yes I think if one is really into SW fleet games the good features of this probably outweigh any negatives.
